In 1985 I really disliked the song and its ubiquity on the radio and television- it went to number one. Almost forty years later and for some years now I think it is a work of genius primarily for its lyrics and focus on its essentially anti war message. Vietnam was only a decade ago in 1985 yet it was never referred to in school or wider society that I can remember. It is as if society just wanted to ignore it at least in the UK. Perhaps it also reflected the UK's insularity ( no change there post Brexit) and refusal to send troops to Vietnam at the behest of the Americans. In contrast people never stopped talking about World War Two with all the xenophobic anti German commentary that went with it. Paul Hardcastle hit a nerve with 19's contribution to understanding of the futility of war. In 2024 over 50,000 Russians have died in its war of aggression against Ukraine which is more than America lost in a decade in Vietnam.

Brilliant. Despite the thrill of so much of the rest of the synth ouevre in the eighties, I never liked Gary Numan's music though Numanoids would find that heretical no doubt. Same with Kraftwerk even if they are the godfathers of the genre but I digress. Radio Heart is a golden pop song with irresistible hooks and a great chorus.

Die 80er und 90er wie sie immer als super Zeit beschrieben wurden gab es so nicht. Wir waren wie Schafe und geblendet von vermeintlichen Möglichkeiten. Doch die jungen Mitmenschen die sich vom Dach stürzten haben nur wenige gesehen. Wir waren berauscht und ich ebenso. Wir waren auch dumm und naiv und haben uns füttern lassen wie Fische. Gebt der heutigen Zeit ebenso eine Chance gut zu sein, sie ist besser aber auch nicht wirklich.

Such a shame that he died before his time in his fifties in 2021. He died in the Hammersmith Hospital West London, down the same road I used to work in during the nineties and early 2000s. I Promised Myself is his best track in my view, a stunningly good piece of music. Not a hit in Britain but very popular elsewhere in Europe.

Human is brilliant. Two of my least favourite songs in The Final Countdown by Europe and that other effort by DJ Sven and Miker G or whatever they were called. DJ Sven and MC Miker G Holiday Rap-just looked it up forcing me to think about it for one of only a few times since 1986. Dire.
